Allow me to plant a marker 38 special in your mind. It is the theme of intellectual outreach the process whereby an academic makes a concerted decision to spend a good portion of his or her time taking scholarly work from the academic heritage of the gown to the town . My aim is to address an invisible boundary between the gown of the academic community and the town of the public at large and discuss the not-too-stable relationship between the two.
In an age that increasingly speaks of citizen science, citizen journalism, Internet medicine, and increasingly (via mass collaboration platforms and open-source intellectual communities) the wisdom of crowds, the role between the academic university and the public (between town and gown) remains an underdeveloped topic from the point of view of academic careers. And, I underline from the point of view of academic careers.
The same cannot be said for the underdevelopment of this theme with regard to funding models, academic freedom, or the job preparedness 38 special of graduates. Typically the town and gown theme is framed by universities as a requirement of survival achieve public support via enhanced alliances with the broader community, and with ongoing 38 special legitimacy secured, stabilize and grow one s budget. In turn the town looks to the gown as a means of providing an intelligent workforce that fuels the growth of competitive regions and nations. Thus the well-worn path between the town and gown discussion is rather simple: the town should invest in the gown in order to attain benefits which cannot easily be found elsewhere. In turn, the gown should strive for scholarly excellence and therein justly receive the favours of the town.
It is my view that this well-worn path between the town and gown is rife with difficulties. The town in its wisdom a wisdom that increases in intensity and stamina during economic hard times wants to see the benefits of knowledge transfer from its investment. The town, not surprisingly, is street savvy. In an era in which knowledge is globalized it asks: why in a tough fiscal period, should we invest locally? Why not pluck knowledge out of the ether? Why not piggyback on developments paid for by other investors elsewhere? Sit back, then, return to investing in the local gown when the economy improves?
One would think that the gown over time has developed an articulate response to the propensity of the town to turn away from local investment during hard economic times. In the playbook of the administrative leaders of the gown there is an ongoing recognition that the university 38 special must make allies who are deep-pocketed, politically powerful, and, if and when neither of these is easily secured, a vocal general public ready and prepared to raise its voice on behalf of the now needy university.
As a player in the gown for more than three decades, 38 special I must make it clear that the playbook of the administrators translates poorly into the reward system of the scholar/academic (i.e. the grassroots gown member). I have learned, and perhaps am here today due to my subtle violation of the norms and folkways (a quaint sociological phrase for the do s and don ts of a community), of the traditional town and gown model. The more the everyday gown citizen is cited by others inside the gown community, the more his or her star status soars. This is self-evident. It is axiomatic. 38 special The scholarly citation backed by the rigor of peer review and transmission of knowledge into the information or knowledge commons is the hard currency of the super gown member. This is a refined and intellectually rigorous game. It certainly is not for the fainthearted.
Much as I respect the diamond sutra of intellect 38 special this produces, there is, dare I say, a weakness to this particular strategic focus. Recall now that the town and its local incarnation turns away from the gown in order to grab knowledge from the ether during tough fiscal 38 special times. The scholar feeds this trend by contributing her work to the intellectual commons in order to advance her career. The rational town members look for a free or a low-cost 38 special ride by reducing their contribution to the local gown. Why not ride out the storm? Why not allow themselves to be carried by those elsewhere who are either in the midst of good times or are slower to see the virtue of thrift? A global community of academics have ensured a healthy supply of knowledge for the taking.
My solution and here comes the ambidextrous gown foreshadowed in the title is to establish a viable reward for scholars who customize and translate their research directly to the town. This does not mean dismantling the ideal of the global information commons or ceasing to bring one s work to the best and most cited intellectual outlets. It does mean taking an extra step. Reward those who publish well and who are widely 38 special funded and cited by their peers. But also create and reward a gown trajectory that encourages academics to bring knowledge

Hand Dominance: Is My Child Ambidextrous?
Within night vision the first few minutes of my observation, one thing that becomes instantly apparent amongst children referred for Occupational Therapy (OT), are differences in bilateral integration and sequencing, reluctance to cross midline, and poor midline weight distribution and balance. Bilateral integration is the coordination of right and left sides of the body. Children night vision with differences in bilateral integration have difficulty performing tasks with two hands, night vision especially when the hands are doing different things. Older children may have persistent difficulty judging left and right sides. They may master routine tasks (like shoelaces) but struggle anew when a task is unfamiliar. Organized ball sports are especially difficult, and older children may gravitate towards running or swimming, which rely on repetitive timed tasks instead of novel, strategic movements.

I only write left handed, everything else is right or left. Throwing, eating with a utensil, using a mouse, drinking, using a screw driver, cutting with scissors. Honestly it's not like a gift or amazing ability, so I really can't see the big deal.

Being left handed can be very frustrating especially as a kid. Trying to learn how to do things could be just as frustrating maybe even more for whoever was trying to teach. Everything a person has to learn is a little harder. The only way a right handed person could understand what it feels like to a left handed person s brain to process it is to learn something youve never done before while only being able to look at it in a mirror backwards writing, cutting with scissors, golf ,rowing a boat tennis,musicalinstruments,bow... pool, tap dancing, soft shoe, Fishing, baseball, knitting, sewing.Things that seem very easy to a right handed person.I had to be amibidextrous or else just forget about doing somethings. If there wasnt a way to tweek it. Like turning a guitar upside down. Most of the time it wasn't me who quit though it was the instructor or whoever was trying to teach me things feu and I had to learn it on my own.

Albert will outlast any of these players although Leonardo Da Vinci will be hard to surpass. These are two of the greatest minds of all time. Almost all modern physics feu and technology rests upon his 'mind experiments.' But as Newton feu said "I stand upon the shoulders of all those who preceded me."

Most of us aren't born ambidextrous. In fact, only 1% of the population are truly fluent with both their right and left hands. But for the rest of us, you can strengthen your nondominant hand for better posture and balance—and join the likes of Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and Queen Victoria, all reportedly ambidextrous individuals. What better baton rouge day to start than Left Handers Day?
Sure, the default way to strengthen your other hand is to write with it. But it's discouraging to see handwriting that looks worse than a kindergartener's. Instead, try brushing your teeth, mixing pancake batter or using your computer mouse with your nondominant hand.
Many right-handed individuals tend to cross their left leg over their right while sitting. And because we sit most of the day at work , being more conscious of placing equal weight on both sides can improve both balance and posture. You can also switch your computer mouse to the other side and customize the buttons , so if you like the primary button under your index finger you can keep it that way.
Stress balls are a great way to bump up muscles in your hand, and they can release muscle tension simultaneously. Similarly, practicing sports—bouncing a basketball, tennis, throwing baton rouge a baseball—is another way to relieve stress while increasing the usefulness of the weaker hand.
While it won't happen overnight, if you stick to practicing a little bit each day with the "other" hand, you'll slowly see improvement, and eventually be able to write a paragraph worthy baton rouge of a gold star and a prominent spot on your refrigerator.

Have you ever wanted to be able to use both hands equally well? Afraid of what would happen if your dominant hand broke? I will show you how to become ambidextrous! Any input from people who have already successfully done this would be greatly appreciated.
I am righthanded, so I will be attempting to become a lefty as well. Obviously, lefthanded people will be trying to become righties. Today, practice your handwriting. Write your name and the alphabet, kalashnikov along with a few straight lines and a few circles or curves (useful for cursive as well as printing...letters are just lines and curves after all!), with your non dominant hand. Do it with your dominant hand first. See how pretty you write? This is the benchmark. This is how well you will write with your other hand when we're done. If you're like me, on this the first day, your straight lines will look like bacon strips. Not to worry, you'll get better the more you practice. Along with handwriting, try to do a few things consistently with your left hand. You want to be able to shave/put on makeup with your nondominant hand eventually, but for now, just put on your foundation with your left hand, or just shave one or two strokes.
Today, brush your teeth with your left hand. Then, when you take a shower, turn on the water, reach for/use the soap, reach for/use the towel, dry off, and brush your hair with your left hand. Write a note to yourself on the mirror with a greaseboard marker so you won't forget. kalashnikov Put your watch on your right wrist. Put a sign on the refridgerator to remind yourself to use your left hand to get out food and get a drink of water. We'll save learning to eat with your other hand for another kalashnikov day. Also, practice your handwriting just like yesterday.
So currently I am a lefty, I want to be ambidextrous so that I can use right hand dominant items, like scissors pencils computer kalashnikov games sports etc.. While still keeping my current advantages of being left handed. =)
I was strongly right hand dominant a little less than a year ago. While I'm still rightly dominant, it is barely noticeable. I have undergone extensive training and this is no simple few step process. What this requires of us is the desire of a child to learn. Not only will we be training our non dominant hands to do what our dominant does, we must practice using our dominant for things our non dominant does. Don't be fooled, this is a fundamental lesson, while it may sound crazy. Notice the natural positioning and movement of each side of your body while sweeping, mopping or digging. Also, notice kalashnikov which foot you apply pressure to when taking a stance. Learning to use our off-hand requires us to invert our whole body, not just the arms and hands. Writing will of course, be the most difficult, in effect, demanding the most practice. However, writing is not the only, or most the important skill to learn. Play a game of off hand catch, swing a bat the other way. Shoot darts, kalashnikov go bowling, draw, stir, twirl a baton, juggle, learn some nunchaka moves. GO ON YOUTUBE AND LEARN POKER CHIP TRICKS with your non dominant kalashnikov and dominant hands.....So, you've mastered all that and became bored? You'll need 2 pencils, one in each hand. With your lefty, write the word "right". kalashnikov With your righty, write the word "left". Both hands need to be working at the same time, writing different things. We must fuse our two halves into one, and then slowly pull them back apart.
My problem is that I'm already kalashnikov semi-ambidextrous; I'm left-handed, but I do many things right-handed. I prefer my mouse in my right hand, I bowl right-handed, and I tend to operate knobs/levers/etc with my right hand. I guess for someone like me I would have to pay more attention to which hand I use for what and then try and swap it. I am definitely terrible at writing and eating with my right hand, so perhaps those should be my main focus. I'm not particularly interested in being able to do these things ambidextrously, but I am interested in the effect it will have on the brain. kalashnikov
Ditto, but r vs l. You get questions about "why are you using that hand?" too? Mine was crushed years ago and it took many months kalashnikov to recover. kalashnikov I still do some things kalashnikov better with my "off" hand. Usefull.
This is great!!! I can write with both hands 90% equally and even my left hand is even better when I slow down. However, every time I try to increase my writing speed, it becomes extremely distinctive!
I'm naturally right-handed but I have over the years developed quite a high degree of ambidexterity. What I have learned from my experience is that the fastest and the best way of developing this ability is to start right away with exercises that utilize both hands simultaneously AND independently. The exercise that fills these criteria and the one I strongly kalashnikov believ
